🧾 New HMRC Reporting Requirements for Company Directors and the Self-Employed - Effective from 5 April 2025

HMRC has introduced new mandatory reporting obligations that will affect both company directors and self-employed taxpayers when completing their Self-Assessment tax returns for the 2025–26 tax year (due for filing by 31 January 2027).

These changes are designed to increase transparency and improve the accuracy of information reported to HMRC.

👔 Company Directors of Close Companies

If you are a director of a close company (broadly, a company controlled by five or fewer shareholders, or by any number of shareholders who are also directors), you will now need to provide additional details when completing your Self-Assessment return.

From the 2025–26 tax year onwards, you must confirm that you are a director of a close company and supply the following information:

  • The company’s name and registered number

  • The value of dividends you received during the year

  • Your percentage shareholding in the company (reporting the highest percentage held if it changed during the year)

These questions will appear as mandatory fields in the online tax return.

💼 Self-Employed Individuals, Partnerships and Trustees

If you are self-employed or carry on a trade through a partnership or trust, you must now report the date your business started or ceased trading.

This information was previously optional but is now compulsory from the 2025–26 tax year onwards.

📋 What You Need to Do

  • Directors: Check whether your company meets the “close company” definition and keep records of dividend payments and shareholding changes throughout the year.

  • Self-Employed: Record your exact start or cessation dates for your business or trade.

🕒 Key Takeaway

These new rules mean more detailed information will be required on your Self-Assessment return. Gathering the right records now will help ensure a smooth filing process when the new requirements take effect.
